NOTICES

Schedule Changes
We cannot stress enough the importance of notifying us of changes in your child’s’ schedule. If your child WILL NOT be attending HED on a day they are normally scheduled to attend we require a phone call. Failure to call prior to dismissal will result in a $25.00 fine for the first offense and a $50.00 fine for any subsequent offenses. Our phone number is 781-860-5821. Please do not call the school’s main number and ask Mrs. Minasian to forward the information. We also advise a note to your child’s teacher informing them of the change. This policy will be strictly enforced and chronic offenders will be terminated from the program. Please note that schedule/dismissal changes can be made only through Mrs. Culkins or Ms. Grinder.

Sign-Out
It is extremely important that you (or any person you designate) sign your child out everyday! Please use your child’s first and last name as we have many children who share the same first name. Also, please be sure your writing is legible. It is your responsibility to remind anyone you designate to pick up your child of the sign out policy.

E-Mail Option
We have the capability of sending notices, such as the newsletters and other written communications via e-mail. We will also be able to use this as a means of notifying parents of any emergencies such as closing early in severe weather. If you have not subscribed to this yet you may do so clicking on Subscribe to the Harrington Extended Day E-Mail List.

Mail Pockets
Please be sure to check your mail pockets daily, even if you subscribe to e-mail notification. (This can be done at our web-site). Monthly tuition bills, newsletters and other important notices are distributed this way. Please see a staff member for location of mail pockets.

Late Policy
HED closes promptly at 6:00. If you need to speak to a teacher or another parent please plan your arrival time accordingly. Our late policy is stated in the Parent Handbook and is strictly enforced.

Rules Contract
You should have received a copy of the 2008-2009 Rules Contract. Please review it together with your child and sign it in the appropriate places. The signed portion should be returned as soon as possible. We have found this to be a great way to ensure that all children understand what is expected of them and to run a safe program. Thank you.

Homework Time
We will continue to offer supervised homework time. If you haven’t already, you and your child will be asked to sign a contract if you want them to attend. Please see Ms. Grinder, Ms. Sine or Mrs. Culkins for a contract or if you have questions.

Allergy Alert
HED will again be accommodating several children with severe nut allergies. While HED is not “peanut free”, we ask parents to limit any peanut butter and nut products that you send with your child, if possible. HED provides only nut free snacks. Attached is a notice regarding food allergies and a list of foods containing peanut and other nut products. Please read it carefully as some of the foods listed may come as a surprise. Nuts are not the only food allergies we need to be concerned with and therefore we highly discourage any sharing of food and children are required to check with a teacher before eating anything brought from home. Thank you for your understanding.

Healthcare
Although certainly available for consulting, the school nurse is not available for health care for children while at Extended Day. However, all of the HED staff is First Aid and CPR trained and we do have a Health Care Consultant, although not on site. Please remember that you must fill out a Medication Consent Form in order for us to administer any medications while your child is at HED. There is one in the back of your Parent Handbook.

Parent Handbook
All new families will receive a copy of our Parent Handbook. Please read it carefully as it contains all of our policies and procedures. Returning families will receive a supplement handbook this year which contains only new information and policies. In each, the final two pages are a Medication Consent Form in case you need us to administer medication to your child. If you have any questions, or if you did not receive your copy, please see Ms. Culkins or Ms. Grinder.

Homework Standards
As the size of HED continues to grow so does the population of children taking advantage of homework time. Please note that we will continue to do our very best to assure that your child's homework is completed and checked. Our goal is to make sure your child understands their homework, not necessarily produce perfect work. For that reason, it is important for parents to continue to check your child's work daily as well. We will keep you informed of any difficulties your child might experience with homework or if your child is resisting going to homework time. We make it a policy not to argue with children who refuse to attend.

HED BOARD OF DIRECTORS

As you may or may not know, Harrington Extended Day is governed by a parent
board of volunteers who have children in the program.

Co-President: Robert Foley (has a 4th grader)
Co-President: May-Ying Chu (has a 4th grader)
Treasurer: Ning Gao (has a 4th grader)
Secretary: Dale Hoffman (has a 4th grader)
PTA Liaison:
Scholarship: Bill Thompson (has a 4th)
Other members: Lilitha Venkataramanan (has a Kindergartner and 2nd grader)

Board Contact: Robert Foley 781-272-2340

We are lucky to have such an impressive group of parents who are willing to make a minimal commitment to our Board, especially with the new challenges facing HED such as working with the town on fair fee increases, etc. We are hoping to recruit new members as we will be losing two of our members at the end of the school year. If this is something you would consider, we would greatly appreciate it. Feel free to speak with Ms. Culkins or any other current board member.

Sincerely,
The Harrington Extended Day Board of Directors

Allergy Alert!

As some of you may already know, Harrington School and in turn Extended Day will be accommodating at least three children will potentially life-threatening food allergies. HED will be making every effort to provide a peanut free environment as much as possible to decrease the chances of surface or air born contamination. As a result, we will be making the following changes to our policies:

At lunchtime on Thursday, we will provide a "peanut free" table. Only children with a "nut free" lunch (including, but not limited to peanut butter, coconut, pecans, walnuts, & cashews) will be seated at this table.

In addition, if children bring any food from home any effort made to insure that it is nut free would be greatly appreciated. We will be asking that before the children eat anything from home they check with a staff in case they need a "safe" place to eat. At no time will any child be told they cannot eat.

HED will only provide snacks that are obviously nut free.

Please remind your children of the importance of NOT sharing food. We will be reminding the group often of the serious nature of food allergies.

Thank you for your cooperation.
Harrington Extended Day Staff
